How can the monitoring be free?

How is this different from PageSpeed Insights or a lab test?
Lab tools run your page once, on one machine, on one connection. Real User Monitoring measures every real visitor on their own device and network, which is the field data Google actually uses to rank you. It is the difference between a guess and the truth.
Can I see why a metric is slow, not just the number?

Can I look at percentiles other than p75?
Yes. Google scores Core Web Vitals at the 75th percentile, so p75 is the default, but you can switch to p50, p90, p95, p99 or the mean at any time, and watch how a change affects only your slowest visits.
